Tax Reform Could Take Out Johnson Amendment
Take Three Minutes TODAY to Tell Congress Not to make Nonprofits Political Tools
Tax reform legislation is due out this week and, if the Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee follows through on his threat, it could include repeal of or revision to the Johnson Amendment, the longstanding protection in federal law that keeps divisive partisan politics out of charitable nonprofits, houses of worship, and foundations. Our ability to focus on our missions without interference by partisan powers is under attack. Join the Nonprofit Association of Oregon, the National Council of Nonprofits and thousands of nonprofits across America -- please take three minutes today to call your U.S. Representative and deliver this simple message:
"Do not use tax reform to weaken or repeal the Johnson Amendment, which keeps divisive partisan politics out of nonprofits, houses of worship, and foundations. I am concerned that efforts to repeal or weaken the Johnson Amendment would harm my community and damage the public's trust in my organization and many other groups doing good work in (INSERT Representative Name's) district. Thank you!"
How to Make the Call: Simply call the Capitol switchboard (202-225-3121) and ask for your Representative's office. If you're not sure who your Representative is, go here to enter your zip code or here to review a list of Representatives.
